English homework

When one buys a snack from a street vendor or small shop in Sri Lanka it’s frequently put in a bag made out of someone’s old English homework. It remains a mystery to me how it almost always ends up being English, as opposed to math or history or some other subject. It’s also best not to think too hard about how many people have touched this piece of paper and how clean their hands were.

Before one of our train rides I bought a bag of samosas to help keep us going until we got to our destination. Of course the samosas were eaten almost immediately and I folded up the bag and stuffed it into the little net on the back of the seat in front of me. A little while later I found myself blankly staring at the paper. I took it out and unfolded it.
